"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1
There is so much pressure at the Christmas holiday to be a picture perfect example of a Hallmark movie. Honestly, our family has been blessed with many years of perfectly decked halls and overflowing happiness. But this worldy expectation of Christmas is ephemeral--like a vapor, the Norman Rockwell moments and seasons won't last. And sooner or later, we find ourselves trudging uphill to even light a tree.
In the book of James we are instructed to be happy when the way is rough, when difficulties and troubles come because through these experiences our patience can grow and make us stronger for the next thing life will throw our way. (Notice I didn't say that life might). We are encouraged to not try and squirm our way out of our problems even if all we want at this very moment is the same jolly and fun-filled time we see everyone else around us and on social media having. Sounds like pretty crappy advice, huh?
But these sad and often hopeless moments even at the most inopportune times are opportunities not only to strengthen our character, they are quite honestly a gift for which we didn't ask but one that God will use to encourage us. He wants us to talk to Him about everything and in doing so, He will lead us to wisdom about our situation and in every decision that we will ever make. But there is a catch--you must believe without a doubtful mind that He will answer you and guide you. Ask in unwavering faith for that solid answer!
Imagine had the Virgin Mary doubted in the midst of troubling times--unwed, pregnant and later in labor with nowhere to go. "Um God, do you really think I can birth the world's savior? Are you sure impregnating a young unmarried girl is the best way to do that?" I can think of no better example of searching for God's guidance with an unwavering faith that He will provide than that first Christmas miracle.
So today I want to encourage those of us currently struggling to wrap a gift with nary a song in our hearts. I want you to know that you are not alone in feeling more bah humbug than joy to the world. But I also want to encourage you to believe. Believe with all of your aching heart and tired soul that God will hear you when you ask Him why, when and how. God promises to fill our hearts with peace when we draw near to Him. When we believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that He knows our why, when and how. So today friends--just believe.
